About
The carbon footprint of ICT is rising despite the urgent need to decarbonise society and to stay within planetary boundaries. The operational and embodied carbon emissions from ICT are already estimated to contribute between 2 to 3 percent of the global emissions and new technologies such as AI is driving overall growth in data centre demand, which globally rivals that of entire nations. This growth in emissions from computing is unsustainable and alternative low emissions pathways for computing are urgently needed.
The LOCO workshop provides a forum for radical ideas, early work, and critical perspectives that aims to reduce the emissions from computing.
We invite researchers and practitioners across research areas and application domains to take part and contribute to our workshop. The main focus of the workshop is on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from computing, including but also beyond just low energy and energy efficiency; recognising computing’s role in amplifying climate impacts from other societal systems.
We welcome submissions that describe new ideas and visions, just as much as reports describing ongoing work, completed projects, and practical tools. We welcome new critical perspectives and insights from other disciplines on established pathways and emerging trends; as well as hopeful trajectories that can galvanise our community.
Hybrid Event
The workshop is either on line or in-person both for speakers and attendees. You can deliver your talk either on line or in person.
Venue
The workshop will be held on 10-11 September 2026 at the School of Computing and Communications at Lancaster University. The rooms are designed for hybrid events and well-ventilated. The building entire building has state-of-the-art accessibility provisions and is well-ventilated.
